Take a Health Professional to the People Day

In January 2002, the Center for Minority Health launched the African American Health Promotion Campaign: Countdown to 2010 to focus local and regional attention on a public health approach to promote health and prevent disease in the black community. Take a Health Professional to the People Day is one component of our campaign. Far too many African Americans have no "medical home" to access health care services. Therefore, in Pittsburgh we use the theme "Take a Health Professional to the People Day".

Locations

Barber Shops and Beauty Salons

On September 17th teams of physicians, nurses, health educators and other public health professionals will spend time in selected barber shops and beauty salons providing life saving information, health screenings and most importantly building TRUST with the community. By focusing our efforts on a single day, we believe we can help generate a greater understanding of the importance of regular health screenings while at the same time focus on people who tend to have the least access to health care.
