Center for Minority Health

Take a Health Professional to the People Day

In January 2002, the Center for Minority Health launched the African American Health Promotion Campaign: Countdown to 2010 to focus local and regional attention on a public health approach to promote health and prevent disease in the black community. Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day is one component of our campaign. It encourages individuals to see a health care professional on September 18, 2008, or at the least, make an appointment on that day or during that week to see a health care professional in the near future.

However, far too many African Americans have no "medical home" to access health care services. Therefore, in Pittsburgh we use the theme "Take a Health Professional to the People Day".

On September 18th teams of physicians, nurses, health educators and other public health professionals will spend time in selected barber shops and beauty salons providing life saving information, health screenings and most importantly building TRUST with the community. By focusing our efforts on a single day, we believe we can help generate a greater understanding of the importance of regular health screenings while at the same time focus on people who tend to have the least access to health care.
