Community Coalitions
Health Disparity Working Groups
Working groups bring together a diverse group of individuals from the academic community, health promotion and human service organizations, health providers, and community representatives, interested in addressing health disparities. Each group plans and organizes health promotion activities for implementation during National Minority Health Month (NMHM), which takes place every April with events focus on the CMH seven health disparity priority areas.
The COID Core’s NMHM community-based events are modeled after the historical Health Improvement Week, which evolved into the National Negro Health Movement, under the leadership of Booker T. Washington, and was observed annually for 35 years. Local NMHM activities are appropriate for the entire family and include health, mental health, and wellness screenings, physical activity, and entertainment featuring the World Famous Double Dutch Divas.
The Working Groups also provide the forum for field testing numerous materials and ideas related to research studies and the EXPORT Health communication campaign. They also provide another large network for disseminating information, as they represent a wide-base of organizations and constituents.
