Heart & Diabetes - “Get Moving to Prevent & Control Diabetes & Heart Disease” Cancer – “Healthy Lungs,
Healthy Life”
In response to the rapid increase in type 2 diabetes in children and adults and heart disease being the #1 killer of women, this fun family festival offers a day of education, entertainment and information. You can learn how to prevent and control diabetes and heart disease through cooking demonstrations, nutrition counseling, health screenings, workshops and a wide variety of physical activities such as a climbing wall, line dancing, a Bouncy Bounce, dance games and aerobic demonstrations. The Double Dutch Divas from New York will be featured. In 2005, the American Cancer Society estimated that 19,180 African Americans would develop lung cancer and 15,500 of them would die from the disease. Lung cancer kills more African Americans than any other cancer. Learn the facts about lung cancer, the danger of tobacco products, and lung cancer risk factors, symptoms and treatment options. You can also learn about smoking cessation products and programs.
 
Immunization – “Immunizations – The Key to Healthy Black Families” Mental Health – “Caring for the Caregiver”
Are you up-to-date? Learn about the importance of getting your regularly scheduled immunizations and the new Center for Disease Control vaccine recommendations. There will be an Immunization Record Review featuring an “Ask the Expert” who will be able to inform you about vaccines that are either free or at low-cost. Bring your child’s immunization record for review and get raffle tickets for door prizes. Take time out for you . This program will focus on caregivers who have a loved one with mental health problems. Caregivers will be taught relaxation techniques such as guided imagery, deep breathing, meditation, all designed to relieve stress related to caring for their loved one. This session will also help to increase their ability to access the medical and social services systems they need and support them in becoming better advocates for their loved ones and themselves.

African Americans continue to contract HIV and die from AIDS related diseases more than any other race. African American children make up 59% of all child AIDS cases. Several films regarding HIV/AIDS will be shown followed by an open discussion session filled with personal testimonies to educate participants about the risks and impact of this disease on the African American community. Local service organizations will be invited to discuss available resources and testing sites.

Health Promotion Sunday

St. Paul , AME Church in Beltzhoover

This is annual event started in 2001 as a collaboration between the Center for Minority Health, the Urban League of Pittsburgh, and more recently, the Healthy Church Network in celebration of National Minority Health Month. Churches continue to serve as community service center in area African American communities. Health education agencies and direct service providers will be on hand to counsel and educate the congregation on physical health prevention and intervention.

The Allegheny County Health Department states that Wilkinsburg has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the area. Therefore, Wilkinsburg was chosen to be the site for the annual community walk. The fun filled day includes a 1.5 mile walk, followed by a baby fair offering interactive information tables on healthy pregnancy, babies, and families. An “Ask the Doctor, Midwife and Nurse-Practitioner” session will be presented, and a baby contest is planned for the day. Come join us; the walk is open to people of all ages.
